The trick of this colourway is that the red arrives last. Écru and beige do the broad strokes on this Mini Herbag Zip 20, and rouge H appears only in the frame and trim, a dark red line drawn around a pale bag, like the binding on a book of poems. Sitting at a café table, it’s the detail people notice second, after the cream, and then return to.
It’s the 20 cm format, built as all Herbags are from militaire canvas and hunter cowhide, with silver studs and a strap long enough for crossbody wear. The pale canvas has a matte surface and a tight weave that suits the small scale; the deep red leather above is smooth and beautifully saturated, and the two materials meet in an even, tidy seam around the top.
Contents: a phone, a cardholder, keys, a compact and a lipstick fit with room to spare, and on warmer days I add sunglasses, no case, they wedge in nicely. The exterior pocket takes a card or a ticket. I’ve carried it to lunches, museums and long walks, and it has never been the bag that slows me down.
One thing to know: pale écru canvas and rouge H leather age at different rates, so the red deepens slightly while the cream gently softens, and after a year the contrast is subtler than when new. I happen to think that’s the bag improving, but if you want the original snap of colour preserved, keep it away from direct light in storage, and carry it often regardless.
