Rouge H is a historic colour in French saddlery — a deep, red-brown burgundy that behaves like a neutral when everything around it is confident. On this Mini Herbag Zip 20 the colour covers canvas and leather alike, so the whole bag is one continuous red, with silver hardware the only interruption. It should be loud; somehow it’s composed.
The monochrome treatment exposes construction the way black never does: you can see exactly how the hunter-cowhide top is turned and stitched to the militaire canvas, and both look precise. The weave has a slight sheen at this dye depth, the leather is smooth and evenly coloured, and the studs sit in tidy pairs at the closure.
In use, it is the small bag that behaves like a large one for exactly the right errands: dinner, a drink, a gallery hour. Phone, keys, a cardholder, a lipstick and a slim wallet, my evening set, fit without a squeeze. The strap can be knotted shorter, or worn long in the day with the handle pressed flat.
The caveat is contrast, or the lack of it: everything inside a deep red bag lives in deep red shadow, so keys are found by touch rather than sight. I solved that with a bright little keyring, which I recommend. Beyond it, a bag in a single serious colour is a pleasure, because it goes with far more than its boldness suggests.
