What actually fits in a 20 cm bag? Quite a lot, if the bag is built like this one. The ebene Mini Herbag Zip 20 is dark, compact and quietly serious, a deep brown that reads almost black indoors, and it holds a full evening’s worth of things without ever looking full. It’s the smallest bag I own that I’ve never once resented.
The materials are the Herbag standard: militaire canvas below, hunter cowhide above, with gold hardware as the single flash of warmth. Ebene is dyed deep and evenly, and the leather top has a smooth, close grain. Twenty by seventeen by seven centimetres is a small stage, and everything on it is played cleanly: turned edges, even stitching, studs placed with intent.
My test load was: phone, keys, a flat wallet, a lipstick and a pair of reading glasses. All in, flap shut, nothing straining. The longer strap makes it a crossbody errand bag; the fold-down handle lets it double as a clutch-like carry at an evening table. In both modes it sits still and looks after itself.
The one honest inconvenience is colour: dark brown interiors swallow small objects, and the gold studs need a wipe now and then to keep their shine. I carry a pale little pouch to keep like with like, and I’ve stopped losing things. In every other respect, size, weight and dignity per square centimetre, this mini makes an excellent case for buying small.
