My test for any large bag is a Thursday. By Thursday, the careful packing of Monday is gone and the bag is carrying what the week actually demands: a laptop, two notebooks, a pouch of cables, a water bottle and whatever a meeting produced. The Kelly Maxi 42 in black Togo passed that test the first time I tried it, and it has been in my working rotation since.
At 42 by 16 by 28 cm it is tall and wide rather than deep, so everything stands up inside and nothing has to be excavated from a pile. Togo’s pebbled grain means the friction of commuter life, under seats, against desks, in overhead racks, does not show. The matte black reads almost soft in daylight, which I prefer to the hard shine some black leathers carry.
The silver hardware is quiet and easy to keep clean, and the strap is the detail that makes the size manageable: worn across the body on a bike or a long walk, the Maxi balances like a messenger and stops feeling like a briefcase in the hand. The clochette and sangles are the same full-size hardware as any Kelly, scaled properly for the body.
Expect two things. First, deep black Togo needs an occasional brush to stay rich; dust settles visibly. Second, in a small café, a 42cm bag claims a chair of its own. Neither has stopped me carrying mine daily.
