Mauve Sylvestre sits between pink and grey, which is exactly where good neutrals live. It is the colour of lilac a week after cutting: soft, slightly faded, gentle in the way autumn light is gentle, and on Epsom with silver hardware it reads calm and grown-up rather than sweet. I did not expect to love it, and now it is the one I pack for trips where everything must match everything.
The leather’s firmness suits this tone. A slouchy bag in a muted colour looks tired, while a structured one looks composed. The Kelly 25’s 25 by 17 by 7 cm shell takes phone, card holder, keys, sunglasses with no case, and a lipstick, and holds its trapezoid shape all day without complaint.
I carry mine against grey flannel and charcoal wool in autumn, where the muted pink warms a cold outfit without shouting, and the silver hardware keeps the whole thing from tipping into romance. In summer it works with pale denim and linen; it is genuinely a bag for most of the year. The silver plates catch the light and give it a faint sparkle without any gloss on the leather itself.
Honest note: mauve is a colour that phone cameras flatten. Every photo I have of this bag looks one shade duller than reality, where the tone is alive and slightly dusty in daylight. Look at it in person before deciding. Mine has converted two friends who swore they did not wear pink.
