All-black hardware changes the conversation a belt has with an outfit. On the 38 mm Constance in Noir, the So Black metal finish takes the shine out of the H buckle and leaves only its shape — which, on a black Box and Togo strap, makes the whole thing read as one continuous dark gesture.
I wore one for a fortnight of office days and it never once competed with what I was wearing. With charcoal flannel it nearly vanished; against raw denim it was subtle and deliberate. The strap is reversible: the Box 135 face is glassy and formal, the Togo face softly pebbled and more relaxed. Thirty-eight millimetres is a man’s width with authority — it belongs on tailored trousers and heavier denim, and it holds a suit together in a way a thinner belt simply cannot.
Fit matters more than usual here because the strap is wide. Sizes run 80 to 115 in centimetres; measure your waist where the belt will actually sit, and remember that a 38 mm strap takes up more room in a loop than a 30 mm one, so trouser loops need to be generous.
One honest note about the So Black finish: black-coated metal hides fingerprints but records scratches differently from polished steel — a deep knock can reveal a hairline of lighter metal underneath. Wear it for a year and it stays anonymous and elegant; the marks, if they come, tend to look like patina on a dark buckle. Just do not stack it under heavy luggage in transit. And because Box is a smooth leather, a soft dry cloth, not a conditioning cream, is the right weekly treatment.
