If you have ever wondered what happens when a bag refuses to be tasteful, here it is: the Hac à Dos PM in orange, eighteen centimetres from side to side and bright as a roadwork sign, yet cut in a shape so classic that it somehow works. Either you are the person for this bag or you are not — there is no middle ground, and I love that about it.
The leather is Togo from France, and on such saturated colour the pebble grain earns its keep, giving the orange a fruit-skin texture that flat leather would turn plastic. Silver hardware provides the only neutral note, which is exactly the right dose — one cool accent against all that heat. Straps, flap and proportions all stay true to the PM template.
It is my bag for grey weather and grey cities: worn with charcoal or denim, the orange becomes the best colour decision in the outfit. Inside go the essentials — camera, film, a notebook, a flat water bottle — and nothing that would turn it into luggage, because the eight centimetres of depth keep its slim character.
An honest caveat: orange leather marks courageously. Rubbing against dark denim and black coats can leave faint shadows on the edges over time, and unlike the muted colours, on orange those shadows do not hide. Keep it clean, rotate it rather than living in it daily, and it will stay vivid for years. Buy it as a joy rather than an everything bag — and it will repay you with more compliments per square centimetre than anything else you own.
