A soft mauve bag sounds risky until you actually carry one. I took this Constance 19 to a gallery opening on a wet Thursday, expecting the colour to argue with my grey wool coat; instead it sat calmly between gunmetal and skin tones, and I liked it more than any black bag I own. Mauve, it turns out, is a neutral that has been keeping a secret.
The size is the point: nineteen centimetres wide, fifteen tall, four deep, with room for a phone, a card case, a set of keys and one lipstick — which I confirmed the honest way, by carrying exactly that for a week. Swift calfskin is the silkiest leather in this range, barely grained and soft as glove leather, and it holds gentle colours like this mauve without letting them turn chalky.
The H clasp is the only extrovert in the design. It closes with a positive click that feels reassuring in a crowd, and the strap hangs long enough to cross the body with the bag at hip height, where it stays out of the way on trains, in queues and at standing dinners.
Honesty corner: Swift is smooth, and smooth leather remembers things. Faint scuffs from fingernails and doorframes will appear, most of which rub away with a fingertip, and this shade hides them far more gracefully than cream or pink ever could. Keep keys in a small pouch anyway.
Worn daily, I expect it to soften into something close to a favourite clutch with a strap on it — which is how this leather is meant to age, and why I would choose it again.
