Red and lizard are not an obvious marriage, which is precisely why this bag works. Rouge Exotique is a warm, saturated red, and on lizard’s small scales it gains a woven quality, like lacquer over basket-weave, so the colour looks constructed rather than painted. The gold clasp finishes it like a sealed envelope.
A hand-span wide at 19 cm, with the shallow four-centimetre body, it carries the evening minimum and carries it well: phone, keys, a slim cardholder, a lipstick, and car keys with the fob detached so nothing bulges. The strap crosses over a dress comfortably, which is more than most small bags this formal will do.
Lizard is a material you either enjoy tending or should avoid. The scales on mine are fine and regular, and the red has held its depth without the bleeding that cheap imitations suffer. In return I keep it away from heat, rotate it so it rests between wears, and put a trace of cream on the flap edge and corners about once a year.
Honest limitation: this is an evening and events bag. In full daylight it is almost too bright for a supermarket run, and lizard prefers the predictable life anyway. For dinners, opera, celebrations and any night that needs the room to lift, it has no equal in my closet. The scales have stayed tight and even across the flap, and the gold has kept its tone despite the jewellery it sits beside. It is the bag I save for nights that deserve it.
