There is a moment at a lunch table when a pale wallet comes out of a dark bag and the whole table notices. Craie, the chalk white used here, is soft enough to avoid glare but bright enough to be the point, and the gold hardware warms the flap nicely.
The piece is the Constance To Go at 20 by 3.5 by 12 cm. Cards sit in the slots with room to spare, notes fold in behind, and the middle holds a couple of coins or a spare key. The enamel fitting is both the closure and the only ornament, which is the right amount of decoration for a wallet this clean. On its strap it becomes a small shoulder bag for dinners and markets.
The upkeep question is fair, so here is the answer. Epsom’s pressed grain resists scratches well and wipes clean, but a pale leather will still take a mark from a leaky pen or a fresh denim pocket, and those are the two things to keep away from it. I have carried mine through a full summer with one careful cleaning and it looks untouched. It lives in its dust bag between uses, out of direct light.
Pair it with camel, navy or black and let it do the talking. Against white it disappears into the outfit, which can also be the plan. In three years of owning light wallets, this is the one that has stayed cleanest.
