Some colors come from outerwear rather than a paint chart, and Trench is one: the sandy beige of a classic raincoat, slightly khaki in shade and almost gold in direct sun. Trench gives the little tote the manners of a well-cut wardrobe staple in miniature.
As a small bag it is remarkably practical, sized at a neat twenty-three by sixteen by ten centimeters. A phone, a card wallet, keys and sunglasses fit with room for a rolled scarf in winter or a paperback in summer. Because Trench is dark enough for tailoring and light enough for linen, it is the rare small bag that does not need to be put away between seasons.
Negonda calfskin gives the beige a soft, matte honesty, and the shade hides the small dramas: a scuff on this color is nearly invisible, which is more than can be said for the pale grays and whites nearby in the range. The silver hardware is faintly cool against the warm leather and it stays bright.
Honest notes: this is a handbag, not a hands-free bag, since there is no strap, and Negonda will soften and settle with use, which some read as breaking in and others as sagging. Fill it properly and it keeps its posture beautifully; let it sit empty and it will learn to slouch.
As small totes go, this is the one that looks like it belongs with a raincoat and a good umbrella.
