Stone gray in a 23 cm tote stops being a compromise and becomes a choice. Gris Pantin is pale, cool and a little flinty, the color of good stationery, and in the Neo Garden Party 23 it makes a small bag look considered rather than cute.
The format is the one I keep coming back to: a small shoebox of a bag, two short handles, two snap tabs, nothing else. Packed for real life it takes a phone, a compact wallet, keys, lip balm and sunglasses; packed for a wedding it takes a phone, a card case and a lipstick, and nothing rattles because the leather walls are soft.
Negonda’s grain is what gives this pale gray its presence. The surface is matte and slightly uneven in the way of natural skin, so light lands on it softly and the color never looks like paint. Silver hardware at the tabs is the single precise moment in an otherwise gentle object.
Two fair warnings. First, pale gray is the least forgiving shade for water spots and street grime; mine gets a wipe after any long day out, and I keep it out of the rain. Second, hand carry only, no strap, so it suits arrivals, not expeditions. If neither of those troubles you, Gris Pantin will pair with almost everything you own, from navy tailoring to white trainers.
It is the gray I hand people who claim gray is boring.
