Etoupe and Ebene sit one shade apart on the wheel, a soft grey-brown and a deep espresso, and this two-tone mini lets them trade places across the flap. It is the most understated contrast I own, and I mean that as high praise. The pairing does what a good two-tone should: it makes the bag look familiar and slightly foreign at the same time.
Twenty-one centimetres wide, sixteen tall, twelve deep, in pressed Evercolor with Swift along the folds, and silver hardware that lets the two browns do the talking. The strap clips long enough for crossbody and sits flush when I shorten it.
I take it to dinner: a phone, a card envelope, keys and a couple of folded notes, with the turnlock closing on its first setting. Because each surface is a different tone, scuffs land on one colour or the other, and the wear spreads itself around. The interior is a single tone, which keeps the drama strictly outside where it belongs.
The honest note is subtlety. Up close, the pairing is a lovely conversation; from across the street it is simply a brown-grey bag, and no one will guess how considered it is. I have come to think of that as the definition of a good everyday bag.
For anyone building a wardrobe in earth tones, it slots in like it was always there. It has since survived a wedding, a flight and one very long hospital wait without a mark worth mentioning.
