Few things test leather like the colour white. Noir Craie pairs a black face with craie, a chalky off-white that is matte rather than bright, and the result is a strap that can lift dark trousers without a single line of shine. I expected to wear it rarely and found the opposite.
The 38 mm strap is built from Box 135 and Togo calfskin, so one face is smooth and glossy while the other is pebbled and matte. The practical difference matters more than the names: the grained side resists marks, while the smooth side looks dressier and asks for more care to stay clean. Which face carries the craie depends on how the strap is assembled.
Worn with charcoal, black or navy, the pale face gives the waist a crisp, tailored line, and it works surprisingly well with denim in the warmer months. The black side is the default for everything else, so the belt never becomes a one-outfit novelty in the wardrobe. It has also become the belt I take to warm-climate weddings, where black feels heavy and pale looks right.
Honest warnings: keep the craie face away from raw indigo, dark leather bags and anything else that might transfer dye, and wipe it after long days rather than letting marks settle in. The brushed permabrass buckle stays warm and muted against both faces. Waist sizes run 80 to 115 cm; if you are between sizes and wear the belt over a shirt, choose the larger one.
