Swift in a pale color is a different animal from Swift in black, and Gris Perle shows why. Pearl grey — the faintest warm grey, close to the inside of an oyster shell — sits on the smooth calfskin like a mist, and the surface has a quiet sheen that Clemence will never give you. This is the smallest bag I own that feels almost dressed, even with nothing in it.
The 19-centimetre frame is true to the line: roughly nineteen centimetres wide, twelve and a half tall, nine deep, handles folding, strap included. Swift’s lightness makes the little bag feel like an accessory rather than luggage, which is probably why mine spends so much time going to dinner rather than to work.
Contents: a phone, a card case in lavender, keys, a lipstick and a mirror compact. The zipped side pockets take a couple of folded notes and nothing else of consequence. Because Swift is smooth, the interior wipes clean easily with a dry cloth — one of the small pleasures of this leather.
The honest note belongs to all pale Swift: the surface shows fine scratches from keys and rings like pencil lines, which fade with a fingertip rub but never fully leave. Rain will spot it if ignored; blot and it is forgotten. Mine has a few of these marks now, all of them mine, and I cannot honestly report regretting a single one.
