What do I actually reach for on a day that starts with a train and ends with dinner? A taupe bag, gold hardware, and no decisions. This Kelly Elan in Etoupe answers that question about as well as anything I own.
The leather is Madame calfskin, which behaves differently from the grained house standards: it is smoother and more compact, with a faint natural grain you notice when light rakes across it. It dresses up easily and takes a polish, so scuffs lift off with less complaint than on softer skins. Gold hardware keeps the taupe from going cold and grey.
Dimensions are 27 by 15 by 5 centimetres – long and flat. I carry a phone, cards, keys, a lipstick and a pair of glasses in a thin sleeve. The Elan has no top handle, so think of it as a flap bag with a strap: in the hand for dinner, over the shoulder on the move, tucked under an arm through a crowd.
Honest note: Madame is not the leather I would choose if you want the bag to stay pristine through daily abuse. Smooth calfskin records contact more faithfully than pebbled types, and the flap edge will develop a soft line where it bends. Mine has stayed presentable with basic care, but it will look loved, not untouched.
As a first serious flap bag in a neutral, though, I cannot think of a more flexible pairing of colour and finish.
