Most people buy their first good bag in black, and most of them buy a shinier black than they need. This Noir Elan is the opposite approach: a black with almost no glare, sitting on Chèvre’s fine grain, that looks expensive in a quiet way rather than a loud one.
Because the leather is goat skin, the bag is light for its size – the Elan measures 27 x 15 cm across the face, 5 cm deep – and the structure is firm enough that the long flap keeps its line session after session. Gold hardware gives the single warm note, and the turn-lock closure is the same satisfying mechanism I have liked since I first carried this shape.
What goes in: a phone, a cardholder, a house key, a lipstick, and reading glasses if I skip the case. That is a comfortable fill. The flap has no top handle – that is the point of the Elan – so it travels in the hand or crossbody, and the slim profile means it slides into a tote for travel without adding any real weight.
The honest trade-off with any black Chèvre: the matte surface shows fingerprint sheen on the flap over months of handling. A soft cloth restores it in seconds, but if you want a bag that never asks for attention, this is a small ask. Also worth noting – the black is deep enough that it never turns grey, even after a summer in the sun.
As a first or only black evening-capable bag, it is hard to argue with.
