Chocolat is the brown that hides in plain sight. Across a restaurant it reads as black; under a window, or beside navy, the deep brown comes forward and the bag suddenly looks softer and older than everything around it. In pebbled Togo on the Kelly 32, with gold hardware, that in-between quality is the entire attraction: a dark bag with none of black’s severity.
Togo at 32cm does the rest of the work. The grain gives the dark surface a matte texture that shrugs off the daily catalogue of scrapes and keys and doorframes, and the 32 cm wide, 23 tall, 10.5 deep body takes a long wallet, phone, keys, sunglasses, a small pouch — with the flap closing cleanly. The gold hardware glints against the deep brown like the clasp of a well-kept wooden case.
It is an unusually flexible bag in the wardrobe. Chocolate loves camel, cream, olive and rust; it makes denim look considered; and it slides under the radar in formal settings where a brighter bag would draw an eye you may not want. The strap and turn-lock behave exactly as the smaller details should: invisibly.
One honest warning: Chocolat photographs darker than it is, so if you are choosing from a screen, at least know that the bag you open will likely be richer and browner than the picture. Some buyers find it too close to black in low light and want more red, in which case look to Alezan. If you want darkness with warmth in it, you are looking at the right one.
