Switch the hardware to rose gold and the same Etoupe reads as a different bag entirely. Where silver keeps this grey-brown cool and architectural, rose gold lends it a soft glow, almost a blush, and the whole Kelly 28 warms by a degree. I keep this version for weddings, spring lunches and any occasion with white flowers on the table.
The structure is unchanged: 28 by 22 by 10 centimetres in firm Epsom, flap square, spine straight, corners sharp, with a strap that detaches so the bag can sit on a lap through a long meal. Wallet, phone, keys, sunglasses and a folded fan all fit, which is more than most evening bags agree to carry.
Rose gold is also the friendliest metal against this in-between colour – it flatters warm complexions and camel or blush tailoring in a way that neither gold nor silver quite manages. Against grey wool, though, silver remains the cleaner pairing; that is the honest comparison, and the reason I own both readings of the same colour.
Care runs the same as any Epsom: a wipe after the day, keep the hardware dry, and accept that the embossed surface will always look new rather than loved-in. Some people want exactly that from a bag, and I am one of them.
If Etoupe has always looked slightly plain to you, this is the version that explains why it is not.
