Lizard is the dressiest leather nobody talks about. The scales are so fine they look printed, the surface catches light like a lacquered pencil, and in black with silver hardware a Kelly 25 becomes something closer to evening jewellery than luggage. It is the small bag I take when I am trying to look like I did not think about it at all.
The skin is naturally lightweight, so despite the 25 by 17 by 7 cm frame the bag feels airier than its Epsom siblings, good news on an evening when you are standing for hours. Capacity is deliberate: phone, card holder, keys, a lipstick, a small mirror. It will not take a paperback and it does not want to.
Silver hardware over black lizard is a cool, graphic combination; the scales form a fine mesh of highlights around the metal, and the flap’s sheen under restaurant light is the only decoration the bag needs.
Two honest notes, and they matter with lizard more than with any other skin. First, lizard dislikes both rain and dry heat; the scales are prone to lifting at the edges if the leather is repeatedly soaked or kept by a radiator. Second, the fine grain magnifies marks at the base corners. Store it in the dust bag, rotate it rather than carry it daily, and this is a discreet, endlessly elegant companion. One habit worth copying: I carry keys and a metal mirror in a silk pouch, because fine scales dislike being scraped more than they dislike age.
