Chestnut is an underrated colour because people confuse it with brown. Alezan is the chestnut of a horse’s coat: warm, reddish, alive, and on box calf it has a surface sheen that makes the brown glow rather than sit flat. Silver hardware was the right choice, because the cool metal and the warm leather keep each other honest.
Box calf is the classic French saddle leather: smooth, glossy, slightly formal, and famous for the way it marks, then heals. The first scratches on a box bag are alarming and the second year is lovely; the surface builds a patina where the light falls, and the bag reads older rather than damaged. The structure of the Kelly 25 does not soften much, so the silhouette stays exactly as drawn.
My load is a commute’s worth: phone, card holder, keys, sunglasses, a compact, sometimes a folded scarf. The 25 by 17 by 7 cm interior takes that without bulging, and the flap closes with a firm, deliberate snap that I have grown fond of.
Honest advice: if neatness matters more to you than character, box will test you, and this colour shows water spots if you are caught in rain. Wipe it dry, condition it lightly twice a year, and it will outlast the trend that brought you to it. Mine has aged into something I would not trade for a newer bag.
