Ebene is the brown that behaves like black. It is a deep, cool, chocolate-toned brown with no red in it at all, and against gold hardware this Kelly 25 does what black cannot: adds warmth to a grey suit and depth to a navy one. I bought it as a second dark bag and it quietly became my first.
Epsom’s embossed, heat-set surface is scratch-resistant and keeps colour even, both of which matter on a leather this dark; any irregularity in the finish would show. The frame holds the trapezoid firmly, the flap lands square, and the 25 by 17 by 7 cm interior takes phone, card holder, keys, a compact and a slim notebook with the flap closing cleanly on all of it.
Gold hardware is the single point of light, and against ebony brown it looks more like brass hardware on fine furniture than fashion metal, which is exactly the register I want in a boardroom. The top handle is also firm enough to hook over a forearm when both hands are full of documents.
Honest note: dark browns show scuffs as faintly lighter lines, the opposite of camel, and while they buff out easily on Epsom, you will notice them first on the corners. This shade is also realistic about dust; a quick wipe is part of owning it. In exchange, it is office-proof, travel-proof and dressy enough for dinner, and it has replaced black for me on nine days out of ten.
