Cream sounds like the most impractical colour for a bag, and I would like to argue the opposite. The In the Loop 18 in Craie, the house’s soft off-white, is the reason: it behaves like a pair of white trainers, casual enough to be worn hard and pale enough to make everything else look considered. It also refuses to look precious, which is the highest compliment I can pay a pale bag.
The frame is eighteen centimetres across, nineteen and a half with the handle, twelve deep, and the twelve-centimetre gusset is what makes a bucket useful rather than ornamental; things fall in and stay put. Clemence is spongy and matte, so the cream reads warm rather than clinical, and the silver-tone hardware is the quietest possible accent.
A day inside: a paperback, sunglasses, keys and a small pouch of cards, or with the pouch swapped for a compact when I am going out after. Because the leather is soft, the bag settles against the body on the shoulder and never swings. It packs and unpacks in seconds, which matters more than it reasonably should.
The caveat you already suspect: a pen uncapped near Craie is a tragedy, and the base will pick up colour from dark car seats. I check my bag for loose pens the way other people check for keys, and I have a two-minute ritual with a leather cream every few months. For a bag that makes a grey coat look intentional, that is a small tax.
