A black Epsom Evelyne 16 is the most formal of the small sizes and the easiest to wipe clean. It is also, unexpectedly, the one I recommend to people who travel: it packs flat, matches everything, and nothing about it needs looking after.
Epsom’s compressed grain gives black a matte, rubbery depth that photographs as pure black and resists both scratches and showers, a combination that smooth black calf would never manage. The bag’s geometry stays crisp at 16 by 18 by 5 cm, and the silver hardware reads almost white against the leather, giving this small square a slightly technical, efficient look. The strap adjusts between crossbody and shoulder with no fuss.
Inside, I keep the essentials only: phone, a cardholder, two keys and a lipstick. The firm body means everything stays where I put it, even when the bag swings; with Clemence, contents shift, with Epsom they do not. I wear it with a suit on weekdays and with denim on weekends and it never looks wrong in either.
Honest trade-off: Epsom can feel less tactile than the rest of the range. It is engineered to stay tidy rather than to age, so after years of use this bag will look essentially as it did when new, with no patina and no story in the leather. Whether that is a flaw or the entire point is up to you.
For a first small black bag that will outlast a drawer of others, I have no better answer than this.
