Craie in Epsom is crisper than the same shade in Clemence, and I like it better for it. The off-white reads slightly cooler and cleaner, with the pressed grain giving the surface an almost paper-like evenness that suits the small Evelyne’s simple geometry.
There is a practical dividend, too: Epsom is the easiest white to care for in this range. Scuffs wipe off the uniform surface; rain rolls rather than soaking in; and the colour stays truer over years, because the leather does not darken or soften around the edges. The bag measures sixteen by eighteen centimetres, five deep, with silver hardware that looks quiet and exact against the pale leather. The adjustable strap runs crossbody.
My kit: a phone, a flat cardholder, keys and a balm. It stays light because the bag is bad at pretending, since even in firm leather a full white crossbody looks overtaken. On bright days a pair of sunglasses in a cloth joins the list and that is the bag finished, sitting flat and square against my hip.
Two honest points. First, any white leather will still pick up colour from new denim at the points it touches, so keep it clear of indigo. Second, and this is the real one, Epsom’s very tidiness means a white bag in it can start to look slightly formal for beach days. Mine is a town bag, and it serves that role superbly.
A white bag for people who want the look without the prayers.
