Rouge H is old burgundy with the lights turned up — deeper than tomato, warmer than crimson — and in Togo’s pebble grain on this Bolide 31 it has a matte, almost rustic depth. I packed it for a weekend in the hills and stopped treating it as a colour; it behaved like brown, which is the highest compliment a red bag can earn.
Togo is supple, pebbled calfskin, softer than Epsom and more structured than clemence, and the surface hides everything from fingernail brushes to drizzle. Thirty-one by twenty-five by twelve centimetres holds a change of clothes rolled tight, a paperback, a wash bag and a tablet without straining the zip.
Gold hardware warms the red further; the full-width zip opens like a mouth and the bag sits upright while you pack, which is not true of every soft duffel shape. The top handle and the shoulder strap give both carry options, and over a coat the strap runs generously.
Two honest notes. Togo softens with use, so the crisp dome relaxes over the first year into something closer to a hobo with a handle — charming to me, disappointing to anyone who wants permanent crispness. And a red bag this size is visible; it will not be the anonymous travel option.
Wear it with navy, cream and denim, and it earns its keep in all four seasons of the year.
