There is a moment in late autumn when everything turns the color of this bag. In 37 Gold, the brushed grizzly surface catches that light and holds it, which smooth leather simply cannot do. I bought it in October and it has not left the rotation since.
The Grizzly 25, brushed calfskin and swift, 25 by 20 by 13 cm, with gold hardware. Contents: wallet, phone, keys, lipstick and a compact, and on cool days a pair of thin gloves, which is exactly the season this bag belongs to.
In use the nap softens the hardware’s shine: gold on brushed gold is the warmest pairing in this batch, matte against metal. The body stays light, and the texture means the bag never photographs flatly, even in indoor light. The hardware has picked up a faint patina at the turn-lock, which on this color reads as candlelight rather than tarnish.
Honest notes: the nap needs a brush more than a cloth, and it flattens in the spots that rub, under the arm and where a strap would sit. Gold hardware also picks up fingerprints on its polished edges, and brushed leather holds lint the way wool does. None of it has put me off the color.
Worn with brown, cream and forest green it looks like the end of October in a good way. It is the Grizzly for people who want their neutrals warm, not cool, and it collects more compliments than any smooth bag I own.
