Not every Bearn is a whisper-thin flap, and this one makes the point. The 18 Etoupe version measures eleven by eight and a half centimetres with two and a half centimetres of depth — the fuller cut, the one for people whose days include more than two cards and a note.
What the extra millimetres buy is unhurried capacity: cards in the front, notes folded once just behind, and enough middle space that a house key, a stamp or a receipt does not distort the flap. I carried it through a week of meetings and dinners and stopped thinking about it after the first day, which is the highest compliment I can pay a wallet. Silver hardware keeps the taupe looking cooler and cleaner than gold would.
Epsom’s heat-embossed surface is the reason the shape survives a full day in a pocket. It is stiff, habit-forming leather; press a crease into it and the crease stays, which is exactly what you want along a flap edge and exactly what you do not want if you cram it. The grey-brown tone hides fingerprints and lint well, and mine has needed nothing more than an occasional wipe with a dry cloth.
Fair warning: this cut is a touch bulky for a shirt pocket and a touch small if you like a full billfold. It sits best in a jacket or a bag pocket, where its depth stops being a liability and starts being the reason you bought it.
