I resisted pink for most of my adult life, on the theory that it would wear me rather than the other way round. The 5P Pink of this In the Loop 18 is the shade that ended the argument: a clear rose pink with no baby-doll softness to it, vivid enough to hold its own against navy, grey and camel.
Look at the structure and there are no surprises, which is exactly what I want in a second or third bag: eighteen centimetres wide, just under twenty tall, a twelve-centimetre gusset. Clemence, the spongy pebbled bull calfskin, gives the whole bucket a plush, folded look; silver hardware keeps the pink from tipping into sweetness. Because the shade is clean rather than powdery, it photographs true, which is not something I can say of every pale pink.
Mine holds a cardholder, keys, a phone and a lipstick, with room left for sunglasses in a cloth case. The best days with it so far have been ordinary ones: a spring lunch outdoors, a wander through a bookshop, an evening walk when the pink reads almost coral under street lamps.
One rule I keep, learned the hard way: no new raw denim against pale pink. Indigo crocks, and Clemence’s matte surface holds what touches it. With that one discipline, this is the least fragile colourful bag I own, and the one strangers ask about most. Kept away from direct sun, it has held its brightness through a full spring and summer.
