Gris Asphalte is named for the street, and it wears like it: a rain-cloud grey with a green undertone that looks entirely at home under a wet sky in a city. It is the colour of a tailored coat in November, of stone steps after drizzle — and the gold hardware is its one warm spark, like a lit window in a grey facade.
At fifteen centimetres tall with the classic 24 across and five through, the bag accepts what a day actually requires — phone, wallet, keys and earbuds case — and none of what it doesn’t. It hangs high under the arm, safe from the splash zone of passing traffic, which is more of a consideration with this palette than you would think.
Epsom’s pressed grain is what makes a mid-grey this dependable, because it resists the darkening that smooth leathers show around handles and flaps. The bag stays the same asphalt grey through autumn and winter, its surface lightly matte, its flap as square on the hundredth use as on the first.
An honest note about the undertone: the green in Gris Asphalte is subtle but real, and it occasionally disagrees with pure warm browns in a way plain greys never do. With black, navy, charcoal, denim and forest tones it is immaculate. Test it against your camel coats before committing; that is advice I give freely and followed myself too late.
