There is a specific grey that works with everything except nothing, and M8 Gris Asphalte is it – asphalt before it dries, darker than pearl grey and softer than black. I keep this one by the front door, because on a rushed morning it makes every decision about the rest of the outfit unnecessary.
The frame here is the compact version, eighteen centimetres wide, fifteen high, four deep, and in pressed Epsom it holds that boxy triangle of a shape without any helping hand. The silver H is the only bright point. I like how the grain stays matte in this colour – the bag reads as textile from across a street and as leather in your hand.
What fits is the question with this size, so here is my honest test: phone, card case, a small bunch of keys, lipstick and a mini hand cream, and nothing bulges. A full-size wallet turns it into a squeeze, so I use a slim one. The flap has to be seated properly over the gusset or the shape skews slightly, which took me a week to get into the habit of.
Two things to know. New Epsom is stiff at the flap fold – give it a fortnight of use and it softens just enough. And grey of this depth will pick up nothing: rain dries off, denim cannot transfer onto it, coffee wipes away. For an everyday dark bag I would take asphalt over black for most of the year.
