Some reds have a temperature problem, too orange in daylight and too flat at night. Rouge Casque behaves in both. I wore this bag through a stretch of meetings and dinners without changing anything else about what I had on, and it never looked like the odd piece out.
Just over a hand’s width, 19 cm wide and 15 tall, with the single flap that makes the Constance so easy, it swallows what I need without bulging: phone, small wallet, keys, lip balm, thin gloves in winter. The silver clasp stays crisp against the red instead of competing with it. I take it to restaurants without a second thought about the seat it lands on; unlike my glossier bags, it does not mind a busy table.
Epsom’s embossed grain gives the colour an even, matte surface with almost no sheen, and the leather is famously hard-wearing, which is why I stop worrying about this bag the moment it is on my shoulder. Scratches stay superficial, water wipes off, and the corners will not fold the way softer leathers do.
The trade is rigidity. Epsom does not slouch or mould to you; it sits exactly as it did on day one. That is either the point or the problem, depending on what you want from a bag. For a red I wear to work, I want the discipline. If red has always felt like a commitment, this is the shade I would start with.
