Box calfskin is a commitment, and I say that as a fan. It is the smooth, glossy calf that the oldest bags in any vintage shop were made from, and on this deep burgundy red it looks exactly as it should: liquid in daylight, almost edible. Nothing else in leather behaves quite like it.
The 19 x 15 cm footprint and a four-centimetre depth make it an evening companion first and a daytime one second. Gloves-free load: phone, a thin card case, keys, a lipstick. The gold clasp is the warmest possible partner for the red, and the whole assembly feels like an object rather than a container.
Now the honest part. Box scratches, and it shows rain spots if you are caught out; that is not a flaw, it is the deal you strike with a glossy finish. The compensation is patina. Over time the surface softens, marks blend into each other and the colour deepens along the flap. My own has two faint lines across the front already and I have stopped minding them.
If you want a bag that looks new forever, choose a grained leather. If you want one that visibly lives with you, Rouge H box is one of the best arguments for the trade. The interior is unlined leather, and the whole bag carries a weight and a smell that synthetics never manage. Given the years of use ahead of it, I would make the same choice again.
