If black feels too stern and brown too soft, meet the diplomat: 2Z Bleu Nuit, a near-midnight navy that only admits to being blue in daylight. Flown across two time zones as my only bag, this Bolide 31 did what black bags do — absorbed the outfit, took the abuse — while photographing with more life than any noir ever will.
In Togo’s pebble grain the navy goes dense and matte, and the surface shrugs at scuffs the way good shoes do. The thirty-one by twenty-five by twelve centimetre frame swallows a passport folder, a scarf, an eye mask, chargers, a paperback and a tablet, and still zips without a fight. It slides under a seat and stands upright on a hotel floor.
Gold hardware against navy is the warm, traditional pairing; it makes the colour lean classic rather than corporate. The zip glides the full width, the pull is leather, and the top handle sits in your palm like it was measured there.
Honest notes: navy and black worn together still divides people, so this is not the bag for a wardrobe of pure black tailoring unless you enjoy that quiet tension. And Togo’s softness means the dome will relax over the years — store the bag lightly stuffed to keep the shape honest.
For one-bag travel that must look equally right at a desk and at dinner, this is my quiet recommendation.
