The black Kelly 18 with a yellow gold buckle is the belt I would buy for someone who owns exactly one. The strap is 0.71 of an inch of Epsom calfskin, embossed so it stays crisp at the edges, and the Kelly clasp is plated in yellow gold, which is the warmer, more traditional pairing against black.
Sizing is settled by the sliding system, not by the hole you hope fits. One strap runs from 21.7 to 39.4 inches, so the same belt sits at the waist with tailored trousers and on the hips with jeans, and it stays there.
I wear mine with grey flannel and black loafers, at the waist, buckle centred. With blue jeans I drop it to the hips and let the gold do the talking against the denim, which is a different belt entirely in the same strap.
Two honest notes. Black leather shows dust and dulls in a way tan leather does not, so it wants a wipe now and then to keep its depth. And an all-black belt with gold hardware can read formal with very light summer clothes, where a narrower tone might serve better. Made in France.
Two small maintenance notes: black Epsom takes a cloth and a drop of balm twice a year and asks for nothing else, and the gold plating on the buckle keeps its warmth longer if you fasten the belt with your fingertips rather than your nails. Set the buckle slightly to one side and the clasp never presses on a spine when you sit down.
