This is the red that makes other reds look uncertain: deep, slightly muted, closer to a ripe cherry than a fire engine. Rouge H on a calfskin strap has weight to it – it holds its own against black, navy and camel, which few bright colours manage.
Under the upper sits the usual Chypre architecture – anatomical rubber sole, black rubber outsole, black calfskin insole, adjustable strap, half-inch heel – with rouge H lambskin lining continuing the colour inside. Sizes run from 36 through 41, made in Italy.
I wore mine with a navy wrap dress to a summer dinner, and the pairing felt deliberate rather than seasonal. Because the sole is black, the red reads grounded rather than festive, so it works from a market morning straight through to a table in the evening without a costume change.
The lambskin lining is the detail you feel rather than see: smooth, cool at first, and it softens the strap pressure across the instep over long days. I have done eight-hour stretches in these with the buckle settled in its best hole and forgotten they were on.
A fair warning about saturation: this leather can transfer a tint to pale socks or a white mat on very hot days, and scuffs on dark red hide show as lighter marks. Store them with a cloth between pairs, and treat the surface once a season – that keeps the tone deep instead of patchy. The adjustable strap helps with transfer, too: worn a hole looser, the red sits further from bare skin.
