I took the Picnic to its obvious occasion first: a long lunch on a lawn, blanket, bread, the lot. It behaved like a guest of honor and, more usefully, like a very light bag.
It is the Picnic 25 in swift calfskin, 25 by 20 by 13 cm, with silver hardware. Contents for a day out: card case, phone, keys, lipstick, a compact and a paperback. I have tested it against my usual evening bag, and it holds everything the leather one does at half the weight. Pale glacier blue keeps the mood airy, and swift’s smooth surface turns the color almost liquid in full sun.
In use, this is the rare small bag that feels lighter than its size; swift is soft and the 25 is pared back, so it swings gently instead of digging into the shoulder. The turn-lock and clochette keep the familiar ritual, which I appreciate on a bag this playful.
Honest notes: a picnic-themed bag schedules its own honesty. Pale blue swift and grass stains are natural enemies, and smooth calf shows water marks if you are caught out, so I carry it on dry days and keep a wipe nearby for the glassware moments. Swift dents, too, so it stores stuffed, never folded.
Worn with white or chambray, it looks like the weekend arrived early, and it is the bag most often borrowed for garden parties. For grey cities it is a small holiday you can carry.
