Navy is the most underrated colour in this whole genre, and Blue Saphir is why. It is a true, deep marine blue that behaves like black at night – with tailoring it disappears elegantly – and then shows its blue in daylight against denim and camel.
This Kelly 28 is the smaller of the two classic formats, 28 by 22 by 10 centimetres, which is exactly enough for a compact wallet, phone, sunglasses in a soft case, keys and a slim pouch. The interior stays surprisingly orderly for a small bag; nothing rolls into the corners. In Epsom it keeps a firm, upright posture, and the flap edge stays crisp through months of opening and closing.
Silver hardware sets the tone cool, echoing the blue rather than fighting it. The embossed grain is heat-set, so scuffs brush out and the surface does not absorb hand cream the way smooth calf can. I have carried it through a full week of rain and it dried without a mark.
Honest trade-off: Epsom is rigid, so what you lose is the soft, worn-in drape that gentler calfskins develop over years. What you gain is a bag that looks as disciplined in year three as in month one, corners square and flap sitting flat.
For office weeks and travel days when only one bag comes along, this is the quiet workhorse – the one that never needs to be chosen twice.
