Gris Asphalte is named for wet city streets, and that is exactly where it performs. It is a cool, mid-grey with a touch of stone in it – darker than pearl, lighter than charcoal – and it reads polished next to black tailoring without matching any of it.
The Epsom surface matters here. Its embossed grain is dense and matte, so the bag absorbs the small knocks of commuting – turnstiles, cafe chairs, taxi doors – without bruising. I have wiped mine down with a plain cloth more times than I can count, and it has never needed more than that.
At 28 by 22 by 10 centimetres, this Kelly 28 fits a compact wallet, phone, keys, sunglasses and a slim water bottle at a push. The removable strap lets it ride crossbody on a crowded platform, then detach when I want the handle-only look for dinner.
My one caution: Epsom keeps its shape so well that it never develops the soft patina some people love. It looks new because it stays new – for some owners that is precisely the point, and for others it is the reason to choose a grained leather instead.
As a first serious bag in a colour that never argues with a wardrobe, Asphalte is hard to beat. Grey here is not a compromise; it is the flexible middle that every outfit can meet.
