Dark brown is the diplomat of bag colors. Ebene, ebony, is the deepest brown in this line, so deep it passes for black in dim rooms and reveals its warmth in sunlight, and it flatters the small Neo Garden Party 23 enormously.
In daily terms, mine is a desk-to-dinner bag. A 23 x 16 x 10 cm brief holds a phone, a compact wallet, keys and glasses on a workday; swapped for a phone, cards and a lipstick after six. Because the top snaps shut at two tabs, nothing spills when the bag rides on a car seat or a restaurant chair. The gusset is deep enough for a paperback to lie flat beside the wallet.
Negonda calfskin has enough surface texture to catch light softly, which is exactly what a brown this dark needs in order not to look like a shadow. Silver hardware at the tabs keeps the look older-brother rather than grandfather.
One honest note: this brown leans formal. It is not the playful option in the range, and with athletic clothes it can look borrowed from a different wardrobe. The other is the familiar one: no shoulder strap, hand carry, so it is a bag for arrivals rather than expeditions. The interior takes a quick wipe with no fuss, which dark dyed leather rarely promises.
Worn with navy, cream, denim or olive, it is as reliable as a good watch. I have yet to regret it.
