Garnet is the red I reach for between November and February — darker than tomato, warmer than oxblood, and it flatters almost everything dark in my wardrobe. It is also the shade that makes a plain black coat look intentional.
The mini 19 gives that colour proportions that keep it from feeling formal: just under twenty centimetres across, nine deep, twelve and a half tall. Phone and card wallet sit side by side at the bottom; keys and a lipstick tuck into the corners; the zips close over the lot without a bulge.
Clemence has enough grain to make deep colours look rich rather than flat, and after two winters mine has softened along the zipper line exactly where my hand goes. That flash of pale lining when it opens is a small pleasure every morning.
Gold hardware on garnet is an old pairing: the clasps warm the red without shouting, and the glossy top handles catch candlelight in a way that makes the bag feel at home on a dinner table as well as a desk. The handles sit easily in the hand even when the bag is full, and the zip pulls have softened into small curves after a hundred openings.
A caveat worth knowing: gold-tone fittings pick up fine scratches, and on dark red leather dust shows more readily than on lighter shades. Two minutes with a soft cloth each week keeps it looking kept, and I have never found that a burden.
