Garnet is a red with a secret: it sits dark and sober in a restaurant’s candlelight, then flares warm and stony in the sun, like the stone it is named for. On the Picotin, it reads less festive than a bright red and considerably more grown-up – the red you can wear to work without pausing at the mirror.
At eighteen centimetres square, thirteen deep, it keeps the small size’s proportions exactly. Gold hardware against garnet is the classic combination, and the Clemence leather – pebbled, pliable, softly glossy after a few months – gives the bag the relaxed posture that makes a small bucket feel easy to carry.
Phone, cardholder, lipstick and a compact mirror come out for dinner, and the bag sits happily on a table or in my lap. The open top hides nothing, which is its charm and its exposure: everything you carry is on display, so I keep the contents tidy.
One caution and one compliment: deep reds can transfer a little colour onto pale fabric in the heat, so wear it mindfully against white silk; and because Clemence drapes as it softens, the bag puddles slightly when nearly empty. I have never minded either – it looks lived-in, not worn out.
It has become my default for anything with candles involved, from dinners to birthdays, because garnet never upstages the host – it just quietly outlasts the evening. If you want a red you can wear from October to February without thinking, this is the one.
