Rouge Coeur behaves like a heart – warm, present, hard to ignore. It is the clear, uncomplicated red of a postbox rather than a lipstick, and on the small Picotin body it has the effect of a scarf knotted at the wrist: instant, deliberate colour. There is nothing subtle about it, and that is precisely its charm.
Eighteen centimetres by eighteen by thirteen – call it a cube with a lean – in Clemence, a leather whose pebble grain stops the red from ever looking plasticky. The gold-tone lock is small but visible, and the soft leather handles settle into a gentle bow after use rather than standing stiff.
A lipstick goes in first – it always does – followed by keys, a phone and a cardholder, arranged loose so the bag keeps its shape. I like it best with denim and white, where it looks unforced, and with navy in winter, where it looks like a decision.
Be warned, mildly: a red this saturated will always be the first thing anyone notices about you, and it will not be the bag you reach for on mornings you want to blend in. On every other morning, it is a small dose of exactly what the outfit needed.
If you are choosing between the reds, here is the shortcut: Grenat is the evening red, Coeur is the daytime one. Mine has been to three weddings, a hundred school pickups and one memorably soggy market, and it looked right at all of them.
