The pleasure of this belt is the contrast between its two faces: a high-gloss Box 135 calfskin on one side, pebbled Togo on the other, both in the same warm gold-tan colouring. Palladium gives the buckle a cool silver-white tone, so the metal pulls against the leather’s warmth rather than echoing it.
Box 135 is the smoothest calfskin in the drawer, with a near-mirror surface that softens into a light patina where the strap bends. Togo is grained, matte and springy, more casual and more forgiving, and the face I would send travelling. At 38 mm the strap has real presence, and the Royal buckle is a broad, unmistakable plate that suits a heavy outfit.
This belt lives with denim, sturdy cotton and unstructured tailoring. Turning the buckle swaps glossy gold-tan for grained gold-tan, so the change is about texture and formality rather than colour, which is a subtler reason to own a reversible strap. In daylight the glossy side reads dressed-up; the pebbled side reads everyday.
Honest notes: smooth Box shows scuffs and fine scratches, and a 38 mm strap will not slip through every tailored trouser loop. Both are known trade-offs of the style rather than faults, and both are why I keep a narrower belt for suits.
Waist sizes are listed from 80 to 115 cm. Measure where you wear the belt, and remember that a heavier trouser waist will ask for the larger figure, so a quick check with a tape beats a guess from your jacket size.
