Porosus crocodile is the most formal material we work with, and the Roulis is the right canvas for it: a clean front, no clutter, a field of large glossy scales with the anchor-chain clasp resting lightly on top. In Noir the tiles read almost lacquered, and the depth of the scale rows is the first thing people notice up close. Up close, the rows of scales give it a depth no embossed calf can imitate.
The 18 cm body carries a phone, a slim cardholder, keys and a lipstick. What it should not carry is anything that stresses the scales, so no bulging and no overstuffing; crocodile is happiest when the flap closes without pressure, and after a few weeks you feel the right load by instinct.
Water is the other thing to respect. Rain and exotic leather are not friends, so this is a bag I plan around the forecast rather than keep in the car. In return it takes polish beautifully, and a buff with a soft cloth brings the shine straight back to the scales. I keep mine in its felt pouch between outings, which keeps the shine even.
Worn with a T-shirt and tailored trousers it softens to almost casual; worn with a coat and heels it looks as serious as the evening requires. The gold finish on the clasp is the only warmth on the bag, and on black crocodile it is enough. Owned this way, it never feels like an exaggeration, only like the right bag for serious rooms.
