Etoupe is the colour other houses keep trying to copy: a warm taupe with a grey olive undertone that shifts between brown, grey and khaki depending on the light. On the Roulis it looks like a well-kept trench coat in bag form, which is high praise from me.
Just eighteen centimetres from side to side, fifteen up the back, and seven at the gusset – flat enough to sit against the hip, roomy enough for phone, keys, a card case and a hair clip for the humidity. Evercolor’s dense, finely grained calfskin keeps the flap planes flat and even, and the gold clasp at the front is the only ornament on the whole piece.
I reach for this one on travel days: the colour never clashes, and the leather tolerates being handled at security gates and shoved under plane seats. The strap adjusts over a coat in winter and sits neatly on spring knits, and the bag looks equally right with a dress or a track jacket.
One caveat: taupe can read slightly flat in photos and slightly perfect in person, so do not judge it by a thumbnail. And as with any Evercolor, keep it dry and conditioned lightly – the grain stores dust in its valleys, so a soft brush now and then keeps it looking new.
Of everything I carry, this is the one friends ask to try on, and it has never looked wrong on anyone – taupe flatters in a way that surprises people. Consider it the rare gift you can buy for yourself and for your most difficult friend.
