The first etoupe piece I owned was a knee-jerk reaction to a colleague’s insistence, and it outlasted every black wallet I had before it. This R.M.S. in ck18 is the same shade — grey with a brown undertone, the colour of a good raincoat — and it carries more than I remembered.
Sizing is the standard compact: a whisker over ten centimetres long, seven tall, thin enough to ride in a shirt pocket without a visible brick. My carry is three cards, a driver’s licence and a banknote folded in half. Even with all that, the closure meets without strain, and I have never had to prise a card loose at a till.
Evecolor’s fine grain takes a neutral like this beautifully — the surface has a quiet sheen that stops grey from looking flat, and the firm temper means the corners hold their square shape instead of softening towards the middle. Enamel detailing on the fittings is toned to match rather than to contrast, so the leather does the talking.
Where honesty is due: a shade this accommodating never tells me when it is time to change things up. If you want a holder that comments on your choices, buy a bright. If you want the one that is always right, this is it, and it needs nothing beyond a dry cloth now and then. It has also come through two wet weeks and a summer in a bag pocket without a single mark.
