Purple frightens more people than any other colour, and mauve is the answer to that fear — a grey-violet close to the skin of a plum in shadow, calm enough to pass as a neutral.
In the mini’s nineteen-centimetre frame, mauve does quiet work: phone, card case, keys and a lipstick go in with room to spare, and the nine-centimetre gusset keeps everything from stacking into one lump at the bottom. The gusset opens wide on its leather hinge, so I can see the whole interior at a glance — a small thing that big-bag carriers never have to think about.
Clemence takes this mid-tone dye beautifully unevenly, lighter on the raised pebbles and deeper in the valleys, so the surface has a texture you notice only when you are holding it. It rewards a habit: touch it less with lotioned hands and it stays even.
Silver hardware was my choice over gold. Mauve with warm clasps drifts toward lilac, and lilac was not what I ordered; the cool fittings keep it a smoky, adult violet that reads considered rather than sweet. The clasps have stayed bright through a year of use, and the silver reads as pale against the violet rather than grey, which is a finer line than it sounds.
Honest caveat: in evening light X9 turns nearly grey. Its charm is daytime, daylight and open air. Treat it as a day bag with a quiet surprise, and you will never be disappointed.
