Ardoise means slate, and that is exactly the register of this grey – blue-leaning, cool, the colour of a roof in the rain. On Clemence’s pebbled grain with silver hardware, it makes a Lindy 30 that looks composed with almost anything, from ivory knitwear to olive outerwear.
The Lindy’s softness is worth spelling out for anyone new to the shape: the bag has two rolled handles, a strap that clips to the sides, and a body that folds shut along a soft, gathered top line. Clemence, thick and slightly spongy, is what gives it that rumple rather than a crisp edge.
Capacity check – thirty by nineteen by sixteen centimetres: a folded jacket, an A5 notebook, a padded pouch of cosmetics, a phone, keys, and a small bottle all fit without a fight. Two exterior pockets with small clasps take the grab items; the interior is one open cavern, so I use two soft organisers inside.
Two honest points. Cool greys can read slightly formal, so this is not my choice for a beach holiday. And because Ardoise is mid-toned, a scuff on a corner shows as a lighter mark; Clemence brushes back with your thumb, but a smooth leather would hide it better.
For city living, though, it is a quieter alternative to black that never looks like a compromise. Paired with denim it reads almost blue, and with camel it turns properly grey.
