Two versions of the same dark brown exist in this line — one with warm metal, one with cool — and the difference is not subtle once you see them side by side. With silver hardware, Ebene picks up a cooler, almost bittersweet cast; the brown looks deeper, the bag more formal. This is the one I wear with charcoal and black.
Ebene itself is a dark chocolate brown, dark enough to pass for black at night and warm enough to read as brown on a sunny pavement. On the 26 by 18 by 12 centimetre Clemence body, the pebble grain gives it a matte, soft-focus surface; nothing about it shines except the fittings.
Typical contents: wallet, phone, keys, fountain pen, glasses case, and a slim notebook. The exterior zips take a transit card and a spare key. Clemence is a leather that puddles slightly when half empty — I keep a thin organizer in the base to hold the shape, and I recommend that for anyone who dislikes a slouch.
One thing to know about dark brown with cool hardware: it is a quieter bag than you expect before you own it. Nobody notices it from across a room, and then you see it at a dinner table and it looks considered. Also, like all dark leathers, it can show light dust — a minute with a horsehair brush solves that better than any cloth.
